Sedum spectabile and telephium

The spectabile and telephium group are comprised of taller growing perennials, suitable for beds and borders. There is some confusion in the trade as to which variety belongs to which species.

All are, as usual, drought tolerant, fleshy, appealing to deer when in new stages of growth in the spring and very attractive to us!

S. Autumn Joy is arguably the most well known of all, a pale blue green shrubby kind of plant with ( I think) a rather unattractively coloured bloom of rusty salmon. It turns darker with age, which I like better, but the initial colour is a hard one to live with. However, the plant itself is magnificent, stately and if I was really picky, I’d just cut the flowers off!

My favorite one of this group is S. Brilliant, smaller than S. Autumn Joy, but with much better flower colour.

S. Matrona, which means Big Mamma in German, is exactly that. Large foliage on a large plant, but very useful in filling in a bare spot quickly or in a large sized container.

S. Purple Emperor is a useful plant, in another way. Two years after I planted one, I noticed lots of seedlings coming up in a gravel area. So far, although a little early to tell, I have at least two that seem to be quite promising. One has red stems, but olive green leaves. Hot combo! And the other one seems to be very dark red, much brighter than its parent. Research and development phase to follow! I can’t wait to see what colour the flowers are.
