Thymus x citriodorus aurea - Golden
Lemon Thyme
Golden lemon thyme is a sweetly scented shrubby herb with variegated
gold and green foliage and clusters of tiny pink blooms in June
and July that is much loved by bees. The honey from lemon thyme
is distinctive. Its preferred situation is very well drained sandy
soil in full sun. Requiring very little care, it only needs irrigation
to get established after planting.
I grow mine in on top of a low rock wall, where the drainage eliminates
the possibility of root rot, the most common cause of failure. It
can also be grown in a container, kept well trimmed for a lovely
topiary, (it needs more water grown this way) or grown as a diminutive
hedge around an herb garden instead of the Buxus sempervirens or
common boxwood usually found. I’ve also seen it grown to excellent
effect in a miniature railway. It’s fabulous due to the scale
of the leaves and twigs. It resembles a privet hedge, or rhododendrons!
Massed under roses or other shrubs in a border, it covers the ground
completely within a few seasons, making an impenetrable mat for
weed control.
